Women in Need (WIN)

Women In Need (WIN) is a nonprofit serving unhoused families with children in New York City. The organization has remarkable success with getting families into independent living with employment and permanent housing.

WIN is the largest provider of shelter, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing for families with children in the five boroughs of New York City.

– Christine C. Quinn, President and CEO

Throughout our 16 shelters, 65 to 70% of the people in shelter every night are families with children. WIN has been exclusively focused on families with children and breaking the cycle of homelessness. Through the funding of the CLAWS Foundation, it is saving lives every day. Lives of moms, lives of children, and changing lives for the better.

– Christine C. Quinn, President and CEO

The CLAWS Foundation’s funding is really a lifesaver. The CLAWS Foundation, one of the best things about their funding, is that it is given to us in a way that we have flexibility and latitude to expand programs — be on the cutting edge.

– Christine C. Quinn, President and CEO

The biggest indicator of success is, ‘Did somebody stay permanently housed?’ so, every year we do a look-back, and we found that 91% of the families were still living independently.

I was with a newborn, and they helped me with everything. … They gave me milk, WIN staff gave me pampers, everything I need.

I was able, thanks to WIN, to get a job that helped me support my family. WIN helped me for years. And my kids have a good school.

I ended up, from having nothing, to being stable right now. … I’m supporting my family 100%. I’m not taking any government funding.

The work that’s being done with our families and the success we have on exiting our families into permanent housing — WIN is getting families out of the trap of homelessness.
